About the Club

DFSK allows members to train and progress at their own pace. The emphasis is on competitive fitness and enjoyment. Students learn freestyle sport karate for self confidence, self defence (to a degree) and fitness. There is a comprehensive grading system for those who do not wish to train and compete at tournaments. However, for those who do wish to compete nationally and internationally there is a vast knowledge and experience from existing students that can be drawn on from within the club.

All club instructors are fully qualified and highly experienced, each having studied martial arts and fitness for many years. They all hold current CRB and First Aid qualifications, and attend regular additional training sessions to update their teaching knowledge. All Instructors hold Public & Professional Indemity insurance to £5m with the Amateur Martial Association.

Steve Foot

Steve Foot

Steve has an extensive martial arts background and has over 41 years' experience participating in and coaching students to National and International level on the Freestyle Martial Arts circuit. He began his martial arts training at North Holmwood in 1979 and trained under Terry Merritt (T.M. Freestyle) for a number of years before gaining his 1st Dan in Wado Ryu in 1986. In 1993 Steve, along with two other Instructors, opened Dorking Freestyle Sport Karate club at North Holmwood Village Hall where it has grown and flourished. In 2003 Steve obtained his 2nd Dan in Freestyle Sport Karate/Kick Boxing with the Great Britain Martial Arts Association and in 2008 his 3rd Dan with the World Association of Kickboxing Organisations.

Over a number of years Steve has encouraged students of all ages to train to the best of their abilities. For those students who have competed nationally and internationally he has proved a worthy coach, with many of his students becoming National, European and World champions in their respective categories. Some of his competitive students have also gone on to be regularly selected for the GB WAKO squad and have represented Great Britain abroad. Steve also referees on the National Superleague circuit and assists in coaching the national CIMAC team.

Steve brings a wide array of training techniques, inspiration and motivation to all of his martial arts training sessions. For further details about Steve or the Personal Training he can also offer, visit his personal website.

Rick Ebdon

Rick Ebdon

Rick has trained in martial arts for 33 years; starting in 1987 under Sensei Terry Merritt and then under Steve Foot, John Lock and Chris Parkman at DFSK. Throughout that time there were periods when he was unable to train due to injuries caused outside of the sport, but each time he fought back to fitness and went on to achieve his 1st Dan in November 2003. Rick also holds a First Aid at Work qualification, has attended Child protection training and is also CRB checked.

Rick has been instructing at DFSK for 6 years to all ages and abilities but he enjoys teaching the Junior classes. Rick says: "Having two children of my own I understand what motivates them to achieve their potential in Martial Arts and incorporate this into all my lessons. Each of the DFSK Instructors are able to bring along their diverse experiences to the club which optimises the excellent training we can provide at Dorking".

John White

John first started in martial arts 39 years ago; training in Wado Ryu under the instruction of Terry Merritt. After a short break from the sport he rejoined with Steve at North Holmwood in 1994 and has since trained in freestyle karate and more recently kick boxing. During his time at DFSK, John has seen the club grow in both size and stature to produce some very talented fighters to regional, national and international standards.

John says: "As a club we are always adapting and advancing our style, whilst incorporating many variants of martial arts which keeps us competitive and exciting. As Instructors we always put in maximum effort when teaching classes and expect maximum effort from students in return. Students leave the class with a smile on their face and a sense of achievement. Come down to one of our sessions and give it a go: we always welcome new members!"

New students will be charged a sessional fee for the first 4 weeks until they decide they wish to join and become members of DFSK. Monthly fees should be paid by Standing Order on the 1st of each month.
